Nesirdin Ependi

Effendi Famous Uyghur literary hero The "Ependi" referring to Nesirdin Ependi is a household name among Uighur people. Nesirdin is the first name, and Ependi which is usually a salutation/title given to a person of higher learning, such as teacher of some sorts or someone of academic establishments that is somewhat similar to "Sir" in English. A wise man, his donkey, his wit and series of philosophical satires about life are the most notable when his name is spoken.

It is not known whether the Ependi was ever in fact a real historical figure, however, Uighur people certainly believe that he once lived although no clear records indicating exactly where he was born and died. He was known as a Muslim scholar whose wisdom was a taboo for then the 
ruling class to whom his wit and satire were a powerful force in exposing their avarice and deflating their pomposity and egos. 

The Ependi tales portraits a lot about the character and personality of the Uighur people who in general possess a composed, open, out-going and yet respectful manner towards the higher achy. The Ependi Tales have provided humor and solace to the Uighur for many generations.
